Frequently Asked Questions
About Adult Speech & Swallowing Therapy
Do I need a doctor's referral for speech therapy in Ohio?

In most cases, no. Ohio licensure allows speech-language pathologists to evaluate and treat patients without a physician referral. However, your insurance plan may require one for coverage. We're happy to help you understand what your specific plan needs - just call (614)350-0415.

What conditions do you treat?

We treat adults with swallowing disorders (dysphagia), speech disorders (dysarthria, apraxia), voice disorders, language disorders (aphasia), and cognitive-communication disorders related to stroke, traumatic brain injury, concussion, cancer, Parkinson's disease, dementia, head and neck cancer, ALS, multiple sclerosis, long COVID, and other neurological or medically complex conditions.

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your first visit will include a comprehensive evaluation lasting 60-90 minutes. We'll review your medical history, listen carefully to your concerns, perform clinical assessments appropriate to your needs, and discuss findings with you and your family. By the end, you'll leave with a clear, individualized plan of care.

Do you offer instrumental swallow testing such as FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing)?

Yes. REN Integrated Therapies is one of the few outpatient practices in Central Ohio offering FEES - the gold-standard instrumental assessment of swallowing. the procedure takes about 20-30 minutes, is well-tolerated, and gives us a direct view of your swallow so we can build a precise therapy plan.

What's the difference between FEES and a modified barium swallow study (MBSS)?

Both are instrumental swallowing studies. MBSS uses X-ray imaging in a radiology suite. FEES uses a small flexible endoscope inserted through the nose and can be performed in an outpatient clinic without radiation exposure. Each has strengths; the right test depends on your specific concerns. We'll help you decide.

Do you offer telehealth appointments?

Yes. We provide secure, HIPAA-compliant Telehealth sessions to adults anywhere in Ohio. Telehealth is especially well suited for voice therapy, cognitive-communication therapy, aphasia therapy, and many speech goals. We'll determine during your evaluation whether Telehealth is appropriate for your specific needs.

Do you accept insurance?

How much does private speech therapy cost in Ohio?

How long are therapy sessions?
