Adult Speech, Swallowing, Voice & Cognitive Therapy Services

REN Integrated Therapies provides outpatient speech-language pathology services for adults across Central Ohio and via Telehealth statewide. Every patient receives a comprehensive evaluation followed by an individualized, evidence-based plan of care. Below are the conditions and services we specialize in.

Difficulty swallowing-known as dysphagia - affects an estimated 1 in 25 American adults. It can lead to choking, aspiration pneumonia, dehydration, malnutrition, and a loss of joy around food. We provide thorough evaluation and targeted therapy for swallowing disorders caused by stroke, head and neck cancer, Parkinson's disease, ALS, multiple sclerosis, dementia, intubation, and other medical conditions.

Conditions we treat:

  • Post-stroke dysphagia

  • Head and neck cancer-related swallowing changes (during and after radiation/surgery)

  • Parkinson's disease and other progressive neurological conditions.

  • Post-intubation and post-surgical swallowing difficulty

  • Esophageal dysphagia symptoms (in coordination with GI specialists)

  • Globus sensation and chronic cough

Therapy approaches: Expiratory muscle strength training (EMST), McNeill Dysphagai Therapy Program (MDTP), neuromuscular electrical stimulation (when indicated), bolus modification training, swallow strategy training, and patient/caregiver education

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)

FEES is the gold-standard instrumental assessment for swallowing safety. Using a small flexible endoscope passed through the nose, we directly observe how you swallow real foods and liquids - identifying problems that can't be seen from the outside. Outpatient FEES is rarely available in private practice, and REN is one of the few clinics offering it in Central Ohio.

Who benefits:

  • Patients with unexplained coughing or choking while eating

  • Stroke and TBI survivors

  • Patients undergoing or recovering from head and neck cancer treatment

  • Anyone whose physician has recommended an instrumental swallow study

When stroke, brain injury, or a neurological condition changes the way speech sounds, targeted therapy can dramatically improve clarity. We treat dysarthria (Slurred or weak speech) and apraxia of speech (difficulty coordinating speech movements) using evidence-based protocols personalized to your goals and lifestyle.

Your voice is essential to who you are. We treat hoarseness, vocal fracituge, breathiness, vocal cord paralysis, muscle tension dysphonia, voice changes after intubation or thyroid surgery, voice symptoms of Parkinson's disease (using LSVT LOUD - informed approaches), and professional voice care for teaches, clergy, performers, and lawyers.

Conditions we treat: muscle tension dysphonia, vocal cord paralysis/paresis, vocal nodules, and polyps (post-medical management), prevsbyphonia (aging voice), Parkinson's hypophonia, post-intubation dysphonia, chronic cough and paradoxical vocal fold motion.

Thinking, memory, attention, and communication are deeply connected. We help adults whose cognitive and communication abilities have been affected by stroke, traumatic brain injury, concussion, chemotherapy ("chemo brain"), early-stage dementia, and long COVID. Therapy focuses on practical strategies, compensatory tools, and skill rebuilding so you can return to work, school, driving, and the activities that matter most.

Aphasia is a language disorder - most often caused by stroke - that can affect speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. Our approach combines impairment-based therapy (rebuilding language skills) with functional, life-participation strategies that help you reconnect with family, work, and community.
